Born in Queens and raised on Long Island, Dr. Alvarez was accepted into the prestigious 7-year BA/DDS program at New York University, completing his Bachelor of Science in Biology (minor in Chemistry) in just three years. He graduated at the top of his class from NYU College of Dentistry at the age of 24, and completed a rigorous postgraduate residency at Montefiore Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

In 2009, Dr. Alvarez completed physician-level acupuncture training at Harvard Medical School, where he was the only dentist in the class.

In addition to his service in law enforcement support, Dr. Alvarez is committed to advocacy and community leadership. He serves on the Board of Advisors for the Donovan & Bank Foundation, a North Carolina-based 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to helping United States Special Operators transition to a life of peace, contentment, and balance. The Foundation accomplishes its mission through a variety of transition assistance services delivered through four interrelated, mutually supporting programs. Dr. Alvarez also serves as the Co-Chair of the New York Chapter of the Foundation.​
